With high elevations and volcanic soil, it’s hard to believe that Burundi’s exceptional sparkling, fruity, and sometimes floral coffee only hit the specialty coffee scene around 2008. Burundian coffee growers often have small farms, requiring cherries to be consolidated at regional washing facilities. A microlot from Burundi is typically comprised of several varietals from many farms. When buying coffee from Burundi, it is important to us to source only from washing stations that pay fairly and provide additional socio-economic support to farmers so that the coffee industry can continue to thrive.
